C. Jason Smith

Although a Sonoma County native, Jason rooted himself in Sacramento in 2002 to attend law school at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Prior to law school, he graduated with honors and awards from University of California, Santa Barbara. While in Santa Barbara his interest in the law manifested following volunteer work for California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. – a non-profit program that provides free legal service to California’s rural poor. He now has a diverse practice focusing on areas such as business law, complex commercial litigation, construction, employment, entertainment and intellectual property.

Since 2005, Jason has formed and/or reorganized hundreds of businesses, processed nearly 100 trademarks and obtained numerous favorable results – both plaintiff and defense – given he has helped clients recover over  $50,000,000 and avert millions more. A few of his notable representative matters include, without limitation:

  • Multi-million arbitration award regarding a gold mining dispute;
  • $1.08 million award against motion picture distributor ThinkFilm;
  • Recovery of millions in assets in a financial abuse of an elder action;
  • Confidential settlement involving an employment background screening company and a widely publicized sexual assault;
  • Finding of fraud by clear and convincing evidence in a complex three week trial against an unlicensed architect;
  • Successful resolution of a trademark dispute involving multi-Platinum rap artist “Young Jeezy” as well as various other “entertainment” disputes involving recording artists such as Journey, B2K, Li’l Scrappy and others;
  • Recovery of real property transferred pursuant to a nationwide fraudulent debt elimination scheme – also subject to FBI investigation.
  • Confidential settlement in a breach of contract matter against a prominent California member of Congress;
  • Full defense award based on a finding that employee claimant committed fraud;
  • Confidential settlement against a Homeowners Association on the eve of trial regarding alleged election law violations;
  • Confidential settlement regarding a whistleblower complaint against a large public entity following the commencement of a State Personnel Board administrative trial;
  • Successful pre-litigation resolution of a tax credit dispute involving upwards of $100,000,000.00 in damages to developer client if un-remedied and;
  • Following a highly publicized writ trial, obtained a ruling overturning Sacramento City Council decision regarding a conditional use permit application relating to the second largest infill project in the City on grounds a councilmember was improperly biased and should have recused himself.

Jason seeks to provide the firm’s clients candid, responsive and thorough advice and prides himself on tireless preparation, fearlessness and work ethic. He is an avid sports fan, loving husband, and father and remains actively involved in the community wherein he frequently volunteers for various organizations and serves on multiple boards.  In December 2012, Jason received the Sacramento Business Journal “40 Under 40” Award for his professional and civic accomplishments. Super Lawyers Magazine has also named him a “Northern California Rising Star” – a designation given to no more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in California – every year since July 2013.
