Born and raised in the Sacramento area, Matt migrated south to study at the University of California, Irvine. After graduating cum laude with a degree in Criminology, Law, and Society, he returned to his hometown to attend the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Graduating with great distinction, Matt’s passion for startup companies and their specific needs relating to corporate formation, financing, website and customer agreements, as well as day-to-day legal matters specific to newly forming enterprises lead him to earn concentrations in both Business Law and Intellectual Property.
After enjoying some time at the Sacramento District Attorney’s office, Matt joined Smith, McDowell & Powell in early 2014, where he quickly began developing the skills necessary to assist both new and established businesses in reaching their goals. Since his start at the firm, Matt has worked with numerous clients seeking registration and protection of their intellectual property, including assisting in trademark prosecutions in the United States as well as foreign jurisdictions. From assisting entrepreneurs in corporate formation to guiding proven organizations through employment issues, he has handled a diverse array of legal issues regularly facing business owners and understands that the law is a powerful vehicle for achieving client goals.
Before attending law school, Matt toured the West Coast as a guitarist in a popular hometown band recording music and playing shows. Although his touring days are behind him, he still enjoys picking up a six string and rattling off a few riffs. On Sunday afternoons, Matt can be found running around the baseball diamond getting in a game or two.
